నానాటికీ పెరుగుతున్న పట్టణీకరణతో నగరాల్లో నివసించేవారి సంఖ్య క్రమంగా పెరుగుతూ వస్తోంది. ఐక్యరాజ్యసమితి రూపొందించిన ఒక తాజా నివేదిక ప్రకారం 2050 సంవత్సరానికల్లా ప్రపంచంలో 68 శాతం జనాభా నగరాల్లోనే నివసించనుంది. ప్రస్తుతం ఇది 55 శాతంగా ఉంది. అంటే ముందు ముందు చాలా వేగంగా నగరవాసుల జనాభా పెరగనుందన్నమాట. దీంతో వీరందరికీ కావలసిన కూరగాయలు, పండ్లు, ఆహారం సమకూరడం పెద్ద సవాలుగా మారనుంది.
ఈ నేపథ్యంలో హోమ్ గార్డెనింగ్‌, అర్బన్ అగ్రికల్చర్‌ ప్రాధాన్యం సంతరించుకున్నాయి. మన దేశం విషయానికి వస్తే 2050 నాటికి నగరజనాభా 41 కోట్లు దాటనుందని అంచనా. అందుకే పట్టణ వ్యవసాయాన్ని మరింతగా పెంచాలని పలువురు వ్యవసాయ నిపుణులు సూచిస్తున్నారు. దీని ద్వారా 18 కోట్ల టన్నుల ఆహారం సమకూరగలదని భావిస్తున్నారు. అంటే ప్రపంచంలో ఉత్పత్తి అవుతున్న పప్పుదినుసులు, కూరగాయల్లో 10 శాతం అన్నమాట.
మన దేశంలో.. ఇళ్లలో కాస్త స్థలం కనుక ఉంటే తులసి, కరివేపాకు, మందార వంటివి పెంచడం అలవాటు. మామిడి, అరటి, కొబ్బరి వంటి చెట్లు పెరళ్లలో కనిపిస్తాయి. కాబట్టి ఇంటిపంటలు, పెరటితోటలు మనకు కొత్తేంకాదు. అయితే నగరాల్లో స్థలం తక్కువగా ఉండడం ఒక పెద్ద సమస్య. వాతావరణం కూడా అనుకూలంగా ఉండాలి.
హైదరాబాద్ విషయానికి వస్తే ఇక్కడి వాతావరణం చాలా రకాలైన కూరగాయలు, పండ్ల పెంపకానికి అనుకూలం. హైదరాబాద్ మహానగరం విస్తరించి ఉన్న 625 చదరపు కిలోమీటర్ల పరిధిలో సగటున కనిష్ఠంగా 13°C, గరిష్ఠంగా 40°C డిగ్రీల వరకు ఉష్ణోగ్రతలు నమోదవుతూ ఉంటాయి. అలాగే సగటున 89 సెంటీమీటర్ల వర్షపాతం నమోదవుతుంది. ఇది హోమ్ గార్డెనింగ్‌కు ఎంతో అనుకూలమని తెలంగాణ హార్టికల్చర్ విభాగం చెబుతోంది. ఈ దృష్ట్యా తెలంగాణ హార్టికల్చర్ విభాగం RKVY (రాష్ట్రీయ కృషి వికాస్ యోజన) కింద పట్టణ ప్రాంతాల్లో కూరగాయల పెంపకం పథకాన్ని ప్రారంభించింది. 2012-13 నుంచీ ఇది హైదరాబాద్‌‍లో కొనసాగుతోంది. దీని కింద లబ్ధిదారులకు గార్డెనింగ్ కిట్లను అందిస్తున్నారు.

హైదరాబాద్‌లో మిద్దెపంటలకు, పెరటితోటలకు ఆదరణ పెరగడంలో ‘రైతుమిత్ర’ వంటి సంస్థల పాత్ర కూడా ఉంది. ఇళ్లలో ఆర్గానిక్ పద్ధతుల్లో కూరగాయలను పెంచేందుకు అవసరమైన విత్తనాలను, ఎరువులను ఈ సంస్థలు సమకూర్చుతున్నాయి. మెళకువలు కూడా చెబుతున్నాయి.
నిజానికి ఆయా సంక్షోభ సమయాల్లో ఇంటిపంటలు ప్రజలను ఆదుకున్నాయి. లోగడ ప్రపంచయుద్ధాలప్పుడు, మహమ్మారులు ప్రబలినప్పుడు జనం వీటివైపు మొగ్గారు. ఇప్పుడు కూడా కరోనా మహమ్మారి వ్యాప్తి నేపథ్యంలో ఇంటిపంటల పట్ల ప్రజల్లో అవగాహన పెరిగింది. హైదరాబాద్ నగరంలో వేలాదిమంది ఇంటిపంటలు వేసుకుంటున్నారు. తమ కూరగాయలను సేంద్రియ పద్ధతుల్లో తామే పండించుకుంటున్నారు.
మైక్రోసాఫ్ఠ్‌లో పనిచేసే అందె శ్రీదేవి గచ్చిబౌలివాసి. కోవిడ్ 19 లాక్‌డౌన్‌ సమయంలో కొత్తిమీర తప్ప అంగడి నుండి తాము ఆకుకూరలు కొన్నదేలేదని ఆమె చెప్పారు. అందుకే తన స్నేహితులను కూడా ఇంటిపంటలు వేసుకొమ్మంటూ ఆమె ప్రోత్సహిస్తున్నారు. ప్రస్తుతం శ్రీదేవి తమ ఇంట్లో ఆకుకూరలతో పాటు అరటి, దానిమ్మ వంటి చెట్లను కూడా పెంచుతున్నారు. అలాగే బెడ్‌రూమ్ బాల్కనీలో రకరకాల పూలమొక్కలూ ఉన్నాయి.
ఇక హెచ్ఎస్‌బీసీ మాజీ ఉద్యోగిని సుచిత్ర ఆకెళ్ల గత ఐదేళ్లుగా హైదరాబాద్‌లోని తమ ఇంట్లో మిద్దెపంట సాగు చేస్తున్నారు. మొదట ఈ మొక్కలను ఎలా పెంచాలో తెలియలేదనీ, అయితే ‘రైతుమిత్ర’ సంస్థకు చెందిన వి ఎస్ కుమార్ తమకు సహకరించారనీ ఆమె చెప్పారు. ఇప్పుడు తమ ఇంట్లోనే కావలసిన తాజా కూరగాయలన్నీ లభిస్తున్నాయని ఆమె సంతోషం వ్యక్తం చేశారు.
“మిద్దెపంటలకు ప్రధానంగా కావలసింది సూర్యరశ్మి, నీరు. కానీ మొక్కలకు ఎక్కువ నీళ్లు పోయ కూడదు. పైగా ఆచ్ఛాదన ( Mulching) చాలా చాలా ముఖ్యం. వంటగది వ్యర్థాలతోనో, ఎండిన ఆకులతోనో మల్చింగ్ చేయవచ్చు. మొక్కల మొదళ్లలో తేమ నిలిపివుంచాలంటే ఆచ్ఛాదన తప్పనిసరి. పసుపుపచ్చని పూల మొక్కలను పెంచితే అవి తుమ్మెదలను ఆకర్షిస్తాయి. వాటి ద్వారా పరపరాగ సంపర్కం జరుగుతుంది. ఇక ఎరువుకు సంబంధించి మొక్కలకు దేశీ ఆవు పేడ ద్వారా లభించే ఘనజీవామృతం, పంచగవ్య వంటివి వేస్తే ఏపుగా పెరుగుతాయి” అని సుచిత్ర హోమ్ గార్డెనింగ్ మెళకువలు కొన్ని వివరించారు.

ఇంటిపంటకు ఎంత స్థలం కావాలి?

ఇంటిపంటకు కచ్చితంగా ఇంత స్థలం కావాలనేం లేదు. ఎంత స్థలం ఉంటే అంత విస్తీర్ణంలోనే కూరగాయల మొక్కల వంటివి పెంచుకోవచ్చు. బాల్కనీల్లోనైతే కనువిందుగా ఉండేందుకు పూలతొట్టెల్లోనే పూలమొక్కలు పెంచవచ్చు. సొంతిల్లు ఉండి, స్థలం కనుక ఉంటే కాస్త ఎక్కువగా ఇంటి పంటలు సాగు చేయవచ్చు. పెరడు లేకపోతే మిద్దెపంట వేసుకోవచ్చు. అపార్ట్‌మెంట్లలో ఉన్నవారు సైతం ఇన్‌డోర్ రకాల మొక్కలను పెంచుకోవచ్చు. గ్లాస్ కంటైనర్లలో ఏర్పాటు చేసే ‘టెర్రేనియం’లలోనూ మొక్కలు పెంచవచ్చు. వెర్టికల్ ఫామింగ్ కూడా ఒక మార్గం.
మైక్రోసాఫ్ట్, ఇన్ఫోసిస్‌లలో పని చేసిన శిరీష ప్రభల మొదట్లో మిద్దెపంట వేసుకున్నారు. ఇండిపెండెంట్ ఇంటికి మారాక స్థలం ఉండడంతో చిన్నపాటి గార్డెన్‌ను ఏర్పాటు చేసుకున్నారు. తనకిది ఓ హాబీగా మారింది. అయితే ఇంటిపంటకు కాస్త ఓపిక కావాలంటారు శిరీష. “మా పెరటి తోట ఎదిగి ఇప్పటి స్థాయికి రావడానికి మూడేళ్లు పట్టింది. కోవిడ్ 19 సమయంలో ఒక్కో మామిడి చెట్టు నుంచి 450 వరకు మామిడికాయలు వచ్చాయి” అని ఆమె చెప్పుకొచ్చారు.
రాష్ట్రీయ కృషి వికాస్ యోజన నివేదిక ప్రకారం తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్రం జనాభాలో మూడింట ఒక వంతు హైదరాబాద్ నగరంలో నివసిస్తోంది. దీంతో కూరగాయలకు విపరీతమైన డిమాండ్ ఏర్పడుతోంది. నగరీకరణ త్వరితగతిన పెరుగుతుండడంతో ఇంత పెద్ద జనాభాకు రోజూ కూరగాయలు, పండ్లు సరఫరా చేయవలసి వస్తోంది.
స్థానికంగానే కూరగాయలు సాగుచేయడం అన్నిరకాలుగానూ ఒత్తిడిని తగ్గిస్తుంది. నగరాల్లో మిద్దెపంటలు, ఇంటిపంటలు కూరగాయల ఖర్చును తగ్గించడమే కాకుండా జీవవైవిధ్యాన్ని కూడా కాపాడతాయి. తెలంగాణ హార్టికల్చర్ విభాగం అంచనా ప్రకారం హైదరాబాద్‌ నగరంలో 60,000 చదరపు మీటర్ల మేర ఇంటిమిద్దెల స్థలం ఉంది. ఇందులో 50 శాతమైనా మిద్దెపంటలు వేయించగలిగితే కూరగాయల డిమాండ్‌ తగ్గుతుందనీ, సేంద్రియ విధానాల వల్ల ఆరోగ్యసమస్యలూ తీరతాయనీ తెలంగాణ హార్టికల్చర్ విభాగం చెబుతోంది.
ఫుడ్ అండ్ అగ్రికల్చర్ ఆర్గనైజేషన్ (FAO) రూపొందించిన ఒక నివేదిక ప్రకారం గ్రామీణ ప్రాంతాల్లోని పంటపొలాలకన్నా పట్టణాల్లోని ఉద్యానవనాల భూమి 15 శాతం ఎక్కువ ఉత్పాదకత కలిగి ఉంటుంది. పట్టణాల్లోని ఒక చదరపు మీటరు స్థలం ప్రతి 60 రోజుల్లో 36 తోటకూర ఆకులను, ప్రతి 90 రోజుల్లో 10 క్యాబేజీలను, ప్రతి 120 రోజుల్లో 100 ఉల్లిపాయలను ఉత్పత్తి చేసే సామర్థ్యాన్ని కలిగివుంటుంది.
శరీరానికి పోషకాలు అందాలంటే ప్రతి వ్యక్తీ రోజుకు సగటున 280 గ్రాముల కూరగాయలను ఆహారంగా తీసుకోవాలని ఐసీఎంఆర్ చెబుతోంది. కానీ పెరుగుతున్న డిమాండ్‌కు తగినట్లుగా హైదరాబాద్‌లో కూరగాయల సరఫరా ఉండడం లేదు.

‘రైతుమిత్ర’ తోడ్పాటు
